The story behind Crewer
Crewer was born out of frustration.
Invoicing is one of the dullest things I’ve encountered in my life, while also being fundamental to running a business and, you know, getting paid. For years, it amazed me how something so necessary could be so loathsome to me. And of course, no matter how long I delayed it, I still had to do it in the end.
I was helping my dad with his construction business, and invoicing was only part of the problem. Keeping organized records of work performed across different projects, multiple workers, and several clients could quickly become a mess.
Then came time to invoice a client for a whole month’s worth of work on a project.
Suddenly, I was looking through notes, spreadsheets, pictures, voice messages, receipts, and who knows what else just to figure out the right dates, hours worked, material costs, and descriptions of the work performed. Then I had to put it all together into an invoice—and repeat the process for the next project and the next client.
It was a never-ending cycle of misery because we didn’t have a good system for it.
For almost as long as I had been typing invoices, I kept telling myself: “You know how to code. You can definitely build something that makes this easier.”
But you know what I apparently knew how to do even better than coding? Procrastinating and focusing on how annoying the problem was instead of actually solving it.
Eventually, I decided I had typed enough invoices in Microsoft Word (yes, I’m old school like that) and gone through enough weekly Numbers spreadsheets.
So I started building Crewer.
From the job to the invoice
Crewer is the system I wished I had.
It brings the people, projects, and records behind your work together in one place. You can record labor and fixed charges as the work happens, keep an eye on weekly activity and totals, and turn those records into invoices for the projects, time periods, and entries you choose.
My goal with Crewer is simple: make running your business a little easier. Spend less time piecing together records and preparing invoices, stay organized, bill faster, and get back to the work that actually matters.
Growing with the work
Crewer is currently in development for iPhone. The focus right now is on getting the fundamentals right: making everyday work easy to record, keeping activity organized, and creating a straightforward path from the work performed to the invoice.
Crewer will continue to grow around the real needs of contractors and small crews.
There are currently no subscriptions or advertising in Crewer.
Who's behind Crewer
Hi, I’m Lynnette, the developer behind Crewer.
Right now, CUSP Ventures and Cusp Dev are a one-person operation. I design and build Crewer myself, drawing from my own experience working behind the scenes of a construction business and dealing with the same records, projects, workers, and invoices that inspired the app in the first place.
CUSP Ventures LLC is the company I created to bring my business and software projects together, with Cusp Dev as the name I use for software development. Crewer is the first product I’m building under it.
My goal with Cusp Dev is to build practical software around real problems—starting with one I knew very well.
Crewer began because I wanted a better way to handle the work in front of me. Now I’m building it in the hope that it can make that work a little easier for other people too.
